The Power of Thought to Shape Attitude

Forget about willpower. You can't rely on it. Willpower won't help you eat less, add more veggies to your meals, put down the cake you think you deserve, or get you to the gym more often. Well, maybe it will for a while-but then things fall apart.

In a nutshell, I'm fascinated by psychology, the power of thought, the beauty of nature and its array of colors. I believe in living truthfully, compassionately, and non-judgmentally.

Late in life I was diagnosed with ADHD, after my twin grandsons were diagnosed at the age of 10. Going through this with them brought back nightmares of my own childhood. The twins were constantly in trouble at school (so was I). I was lucky enough to have these amazing young men live with me for 4 years and in order to help them succeed I needed to know everything possible about ADHD. When they went back to live with Mom for high school, they were changed kids, much better prepared, and I was delighted to be part of their progress.

An ADHD Coach specializes in partnering with people that are interested in taking action in some area of their lives. It could be coaching adults or children or men or women. ADHD Coaches may choose to further specialize in their practices, such as business, health, life style. The choices go on and on.

While Training as an ADHD Coach the student is required to do many hours of specialized training pertaining to the medical condition, ADHD, which stands for: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. This special training is over and above the regular coach training that all coaches usually receive.

ADHD coaches are different because they have a clear understanding of how ADHD influences behavior in people’s lives. There are numerous consistencies in ADHD which an ADHD specialist will appreciate and understand. There is a focus on the client’s strength and natural talents in coaching. We learn valuable tools, strategies and methods for supporting client’s in creating change in their lives. Empowerment is the answer!

In my training, I've specifically learned about executive functioning, neuroscience and how the ADHD brain works. How it works is different for everyone and this understanding is at the core of coaching an ADHD client. ADHD Coaches have a deeper understanding of the role of medications and in general how medications work. While medication is not necessarily right for everyone, there are many cases where it can make a huge difference to the struggle on a day-to-day basis.

ADHD specialists recognize distraction, restlessness, boredom, fidgeting and overwhelm and understand these traits can be ADHD related. Clients may or may not be well educated about their ADHD and what it means to them. An ADHD Coach will try to foster an increased awareness in the symptoms that may be sabotaging a client’s success. Be that success at school, at home or in relationships. Pretty much any aspect of their life can be involved. It may be pertaining to health, eating, weight that the client has the most challenges. Once clients understand more about themselves with ADHD, they can then make better decisions about the appropriate actions to take.

While an ADHD Coach will be empathetic, the coach is far more likely to understand how the client thinks and acknowledge the difficulties and struggles they face. For this client, the focus will very definitely be around the strengths that the ADHD person has and positive action.

The ADHD Coach will validate, understand and acknowledge the client’s situational reality. People that have ADHD repeatedly identify the fact that their Coach actually “gets it”, as one of the most important aspects of having a coach.

  • better understand their ADHD challenges
  • feel less misunderstood.
  • Feel less frustration.
  • More self esteem.
  • Feel more hopeful
  • Endure less struggle.
  • Be supported and encouraged to take action.
  • Become accountable to themselves.
  • Challenge old habits and thinking patterns.
  • Clients learn they are not alone.
  • Go from where you are now to where you want to be
  • Determine what you want, why you want it and how to get it
  • Overcome obstacles, low confidence and insecurities
  • Explore and evaluate options
  • Gain strategies and techniques to reach goals faster

The International Federation of Coaching’s (ICF) definition of coaching is as follows:

“ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole.”

Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve
  • Encourage client self-discovery
  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies.
  • Hold the client responsible and accountable.

What Are Your Expectations?

Expectations enter into everything we do and into every relationship we have. What do I expect from my children, my husband, my friends? It’s complicated for sure, because we all have various ways we determine the answer to this question. No two ways of deciding may be the same.

When your’s and my expectations don’t match, we call it crossed-expectations. This is a common source of problems in marriages and relationships. Let’s be clear. I consider relationships to encompass far more than just love relationships - regardless of the participants. There are however, many other types of relationships. Child to parent, siblings, school mates, work mates, and on it goes. Sometimes relationships will correspond to the title of the different hats we wear. Mom, dad, sister, brother, teacher or mayor. To some extent these titles may preclude certain expectations we have of each other. Sometimes unknowingly.

What are the problems with crossed-expectations?

One way of responding to this question is to look at the expectations we set of ourselves. We expect to deliver excellence and when we do, we avoid disappointment. If we don’t though, chances are we’d be disappointed in ourselves. Our self-image may suffer enormously and our confidence will be impacted. Others may be disappointed in us and if we consistently mess up, they will lose confidence in our ability to do the job.

Additionally, what are our expectations of others? How do we determine that they are accurate and totally rational? Understanding that disappointment results from not having explicit expectations, leads us to set a goal of determining exactly what others can expect from us at the beginning. Not discussing what we didn’t achieve at the end of the chore. I see this a lot when parents ask their children to tidy up. The parent has an outcome in mind. A visual picture if you will of what a tidied up room looks like. So does the child. There are miles between the two visions. So how to close the gap?

Explaining to a child that tidying a room involves the following steps can eliminate some of the disappointment:

  • pick up all your laundry and put it in the laundry room.
  • make your bed.
  • dust all the surfaces of your furniture.
  • vacuum the floor thoroughly. (in other words everywhere, including under the bed)

So the child follows the outline. Parents with perfectionism in their personalities should beware that we must encourage our children and praise what has been done correctly. Sometimes going over all that is incorrect is counter productive. A good parent knows this.

So expectations are set and reset. The goal always is to reduce the gap between the results and the expectation.
