THE EMANCIPATION OF READING

During my studies I have been looking into interactive books and documents. Together with Tobias Buchmann we developed a theory about the emancipation of reading.

Reading had and has an immense impact on human culture. Through the centuries, its role, appearance and availability has changed while its meaning has been mainly untouched.
With the rise of digitalization, the monopoly of the book has not yet disappeared but been diminished. Despite the advances and advantages of technology, eReading is still not perceived to be en par with printed books by many people. Meanwhile new opportunities arise from digital formats and reading behavior changes.
This document takes a look at the status quo of digital read- ing against the background of history, culture and society and attempts to project the further development of the medium. A look a the development of media surfaces the topic of emancipation of media from its predecessors. Based on cur- rent examples, qualities of eReading applications and their impact on the reading- and consumption habits were analyzed. The potential for interaction could be identified as one of the unique features of the medium.
This emancipation process of eReading from analog books has just begun and needs to be actively promoted in coming years. To establish eReading as an independent medium, interaction and navigation concepts have to be found in the fu- ture to support the character of the medium.

Dance Studios are fun

Giant Paper Prototype Story Map

I worked as part of my studies for the IKUM, Institut für Kommunikation und Medien der Hochschule Darmstadt, which had a project running with the Pina Bausch Foundation concerning the matter of creating an archive for the dances of Pina Bausch. My role was to work closely with the team creating a semantic ontology around the works and people behind Pina Bausch. Basically creating the means for the people of the Pina Bausch Stiftung to create, organise, and view the dances and the relating data. A complicated net of information to be annotated and managed.

In numerous conversations and giant paper prototypes was the complex matter moulded into a prototype, which then was usability tested with the end users and the feedback reworked into the prototype.

Seen here a screencapture of the little game we built for the course Media Culture with the topic of Digital Avantgarde. We took the approach of Videogame Sampling in regard to the sampling and remixing that is based in the music industry. The project was mainly thought up and developed over the course of a two day workshop. See more projects created during this workshop here: http://www.tumblr.com/blog/digitalavantgarde

Redesigning AKE

AKE is a little tiny App being developed by a friend of mine. I like the app it is a great idea but I thought something was missing … so I went to the drawing board.

First of all I wanted to try a new style. I have seen enough of the standard elements and wanted to focus on the core interactions. The main goal of the app is to log the pain you are having. And later on see a history about it :)

STEP ONE - HOME IS WHERE THE PAIN IS.

When launching the app you are directly presented with a picker for the various areas of pain you might have. The key primary action is logging it which brings you to the next screen by hitting the bottom center button. To the left the history is located and to the right the settings. All the way on the top right the user can get more information about the apps background.

A focus by the developer was to create a familiar and friendly feel, so that the app takes a slightly positive spin to the heavy feel of logging ones pain.

STEP TWO - THE INTENSITY

Avoiding numbers. How can pain be measured in numbers? Well it can’t. What is important is, is the pain today worse then yesterday. So with a small indicator where you were last time the size of bubbles indicate how bad the pain is. Again avoiding smiley faces with frowning expressions to stay within your realm of interpretation how the pain feels.

STEP TREE - A NOTE

Giving context is important, especially with something as undefinable as pain.

THE REST - MAKING IT HOLE

Having a history and being able to view how much pain one was having at a certain time in your past is one of the core ideas. The bubbles provide a quick glance at how bad was a day with multiple entries close together.

The info page gives character. One thing that most got me was Johannes, the dev, simply putting why he built this app.

I built this app because my back hurts

Simple and to the point. Making him the center of it and showing people that he wants feedback and giving them an option to donate a small amount makes this app less anonymous providing the character it needs.

Overall I think this app follows a great path, maybe my thoughts on the redesign create a better experience for the users.

This project was created prior to the bachelor thesis. Together with Tobias Buchmann, Christoph Diederichs, and Julian Klotz the idea to enhance office communication came quickly. Hence Comport is a system that is exclusively designed to enhance digital communication in offices. It provides space for making phone calls, while isolating visual and acoustical disturbances from the outside. Remote desktop sharing grants access to the documents on your personal computer, to which you are automatically connected when you enter Comport. If you are making a phone call while entering Comport, it is passed to a handsfree set. The outside of Comport is made of a lightweight, wooden frame. The interior consists of a felt and milk glass combination, which lets daylight pass to the inside.

co2mission app

Documentation

Together with Christoph Diederichs, Christian Junglas, and Tobias Buchmann I've worked on the product co2mission. The original idea was born as early as the 3rd semester but wouldn’t let us go. The old concept has basically be revamped due to technological advancements and was developed as a native iOS prototype with full functionality including server backend.

co2misson is an application with the task to bring the topic of CO2 emissions closer to the user. Hereby the focus lies on the movement of each user, which is being recorded. The traveled distance with public transportation or by bike is being viewed in comparison to the CO2 average emission a personal car would have emitted. To further understanding the amount of CO2 is displayed by everyday objects and their CO2 emission during production and delivery.

If you do want to know more, I'd be more than happy to either chat about the product or let you dive right into the thesis by providing a PDF.

The approach we took with grid surfer is an old school arcade game inspired by cyber punk look of tron but including todays technology, such as the Wii Balance Board as input device and top notch stereoscopic images.

The whole project was built with the Unity 3D engine and custom graphics out of cinema 4D. The soundtrack is originally composed for a spacial sound experience.

About the team:

The team consists out of Dominik Braun, Daniel Dünchem, Sebastian Haase, and Jannicke Ostoike. 4 Master students (Media Direction) at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt.

Me

I work at vaamo, where I design the product from UX to UI. My research during my Master studies in Media Direction already focused on the emancipation process of mobile payment and the role trust plays in the adaption of said technology. I preceded with my Bachelor studies in Digital Media interactive media design.

Of course you can find me on Linkedin to get to know more about my professional past or stalk away on my twitter ;-)

About me

Port was a little concept for an app to pick up wares you order and pay online. Such as with a coffee shop.
