That is an important philosophical question that I am not able to answer yet… But, it is quite interesting to realize that we can always answer who we are not!
For the purposes of this website, I can say that I am an astronomer, with a fascination for astrometry, astroinformatics, astrostatistics and space-missions (space the final frontier… to boldly go where no one has been before… right?). I received a double-degree PhD in “Astronomy, Astrophysics & Particles” from the Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil) and Université de Bordeaux (France), and since 2011 I work at the Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal) in an amazing group that brings together astronomers and engineers (hardware and software) called CENTRA/SIM. Prior to that, I graduated from the Conservatório Musical Anchieta, in São Paulo, in classical Piano, and I received the MSc and BSc degrees from the Universidade de São Paulo (in Astrophysics and Physics, respectively).
If that helps, some of my favorite books are Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, The Idiot by Dostoievsky, La valeur de la Science by Poincaré, and a few nice old greeks. I have been trying to finish Knuth’s The Art of Computer Programming for sometime, but it is consuming my soul and it is still far from attaining convergence… well, that author still did not converged neither, so I am not ashamed of myself. I am also struggling to translate Tycho Brahe’s Astronomiae Instauratae Mechanica, which is an enlightening short work, to Portuguese during my (scarce) free time… In terms of music, well, Bach with a touch of Pärt, “what else?”!
