# About The Grid

The Grid is a real-time spot market for AI inference, operated by Grid Markets LLC and built by Spectral Labs. Developers buy standardized quality tiers instead of individual models, and suppliers compete to serve each request.

## What The Grid does

The Grid turns LLM output into a fungible commodity. Instead of contracting with one model vendor at a fixed rate card, you buy a standardized instrument such as text-prime, code-max, or agent-standard. Every instrument has a published specification covering the quality floor, context window, output length, and latency that a supplier must meet in order to serve it.

When you send a request, The Grid routes it to a qualifying supplier at the price the order book is clearing at right now. Suppliers are benchmarked continuously; one that drops below an instrument's specification stops receiving traffic for that instrument. You get a market price rather than a list price, and you never rewrite your integration when the underlying model changes.

## How teams use it

The Consumption API speaks OpenAI Chat Completions, and a beta Messages API speaks the Anthropic format. Migrating an existing application means changing three values: the base URL, the API key, and the model string. Your SDK, request body, and response shape stay the same.

Buying is not one-way. Tokens held in a Trading account can be resold on the same order book they were bought from, with market or limit sell orders, and the proceeds fund future purchases. That keeps spend tied to what a workload actually consumes rather than to what it was forecast to consume.

## Built for agents

An agent can onboard to The Grid over HTTP without a human copying a key out of a dashboard. The Platform API implements the OAuth 2.0 device authorization grant (RFC 8628): request a device code, have a person approve the grant once, then mint a consumption API key programmatically and start running inference. Scopes are named and least-privilege, and the set a client may request is discoverable from a public endpoint.

Machine-readable descriptions of the product live at predictable URLs: llms.txt and llms-full.txt for prose context, brand-facts.json for structured facts, openapi.json for the API contract, and .well-known/docs.json for the documentation map. Pages on this site also serve a Markdown representation to clients that ask for one with an Accept header.
